Kampo,

traditional sino-japanese Phytotherapy (traditional healing art using herbs and or minerals) is beside acupuncture widely used throughout Asia. In Japan about 200 prescriptions and their single drugs are included in the medical system and treatment is paid by the insurance of the patient. Kampo-prescriptions are composed of 2 to 15, sometimes more single drugs, which are blended according to the old classic books. Most of the drugs are of herbal generic, a small percentage is made of minerals, very few are derived from animalparts.Today in Japan there are about 360 various drugs in common use, in China about 2000. Over 5000 single drugs are known today. Prescriptions are normally prepared as decoction or sold as dried granulat over the counter.
